Cymatics is the science of visualising sound. Therefore, the overall aim of this project was to create a new visual system to display music. This project involved many different elements, such as: typeface design, photography, capturing video, and working with layout.

The imagery was generated by placing a petri dish on a subwoofer and filled it with frozen Vodka. The large alcohol content prevents Vodka from turning solid, so it only thickens. I then played audio frequencies through the subwoofer, which would trigger a reaction from the liquid.

I took the notes from a musical scale (C, C#, D, D# and so on), and found the corresponding frequencies for each note. For example, I used a C note of 33Hz. These were the frequencies I played through the speaker, and they all formed different visual results and patterns within the liquid.

I was able to combine my imagery with a custom typeface (inspired by the curves and patterns formed in the frozen Vodka), to create this poster series.

The final poster series contributed towards my project Cymatic Spectrum, which was a finalist in the 2018 Best Design Awards.
